Connecting with our Community

Women in Black is a grassroots nonprofit organization founded in 2025 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, by a dedicated group of women determined to address the social and economic challenges facing women and children in their community. Recognizing that many families in Kalamazoo navigate limited access to resources, the organization was built on a shared commitment to uplift, support, and celebrate women and children with dignity and respect.

Though small in size, Women in Black has proven to be a powerful force for community connection and care. The organization focuses on creating meaningful, inclusive events that bring families together while providing encouragement and support. Among its initiatives are seasonal and family-centered gatherings such as a community Easter Egg Hunt, Mother’s Day celebrations, and its flagship event—a community baby shower designed to support expecting mothers with essential items, resources, and a sense of belonging.

Committed to Measurable Impact in our community

Local resources to support women and children

In Kalamazoo, the work of organizations like Women in Black exists within a broader network of resources dedicated to supporting women and children—yet the continued need for grassroots, community-driven efforts remains clear. While the city is home to several impactful programs, many families still face barriers to access, awareness, and long-term stability.

One of the most prominent resources is YWCA Kalamazoo, which serves as a cornerstone for women and families in crisis. The YWCA provides a wide range of free services, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling, childcare, and advocacy for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It also offers programs focused on economic empowerment, racial justice, and youth development, helping women and children not only find safety but build sustainable futures.

In the area of maternal and infant health, initiatives like Cradle Kalamazoo work collaboratively to improve birth outcomes and reduce disparities, particularly among vulnerable populations. By connecting families to healthcare, education, and support systems, the initiative emphasizes dignity and equity from pregnancy through early childhood.

Public health programs such as WIC Kalamazoo County (Women, Infants, and Children) provide essential nutritional support, breastfeeding resources, and access to healthy food for low-income mothers and young children. These services are critical in promoting healthy development during the earliest stages of life while also linking families to broader healthcare and community resources.

Community-based nonprofits also play a vital role. Organizations like Mothers of Hope focus on empowering mothers affected by substance use challenges, offering education, recovery support, and community-building opportunities. Meanwhile, Rootead centers its work on birth justice, culturally grounded maternal care, and youth enrichment, helping families navigate pregnancy and early parenting with culturally responsive support.

For families experiencing housing insecurity, services such as Kalamazoo Gospel Mission Women’s Ministries provide temporary shelter, meals, childcare, and supportive programming for women and children in crisis.

Despite this network of support, gaps still exist—particularly in consistent access, awareness of services, and the ability to meet everyday needs with dignity. This is where organizations like Women in Black are essential. By hosting community-centered events such as baby showers, holiday celebrations, and family gatherings, they not only provide tangible resources but also foster connection, joy, and a sense of belonging that complements traditional service models.

Together, these organizations reflect both the strength of Kalamazoo’s support system and the ongoing need for compassionate, community-led solutions. Women in Black stands as a vital part of that ecosystem—bridging gaps, uplifting families, and ensuring that women and children are not only supported, but celebrated.
